What Is Your Game Plan?
by Dick Hunt, April  17th, 2012.
In your view of the shortness and uncertainty of human life, what are your plans for the long haul? Or for that matter, the short haul,  given that most of us  have little idea how long we will live?  A modern rendering of the beloved 23rd Psalm, in a version named The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, the ‘compilers’ have changed the 4th verse from, ‘Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death’ to ‘Even though I walk through the darkest valley’. They have deliberately removed the  meaning about the “sting of death” and left readers hanging in mid air. During a world war in the 20th Century, a Chaplain in the front lines of a ground battle wrote,  “There is no such thing as an Atheist in a Fox Hole”.  We do no good to anyone by trying to divert their attention from such a basic fact of life as their eventual death by altering the Scriptures to lead them astray. The truth is that we all going to die.  Some wag has said, “I am not afraid of death.  I just don’t want to be there when it happens”. We will not have that choice! I have sat with many people at the point of their deaths.  The ones who have walked with God, learned to trust Him, given their lives to him through receiving Jesus Christ for their Saviour and Lord in their lives, reach out to death as the Gate of Heaven.  Those who have put off dealing with God until forced to do so by imminent death are not at all sure about leaving this present life. Some do make their peace with God,even in their last moments.  Many of those who don’t or won’t, die in an agony of  doubt and remorse.
There is a better Way.  In light of the  many people who do commit themselves to God in Christ, we can  find multitudes who are filled with positive joy and happiness, no matter what their circumstances in life. I have known many old couples who have been happy just with their little cottages, small incomes, just making ends meet who  are so grateful to God for his care over the long haul.  One such couple  was parted by the death of the wife, (not an uncommon occurrence) and their son took it upon himself to persuade his father to sell the little cottage so he could have his share of the estate ‘up front’. (Prodigal Son?)  His Dad was moved against his will into a care home where he had little care and no friends. I used to see him and he was just waiting, in Faith that didn’t waver, until God would call him ‘home’ to be with his wife in the kingdom of  God I am deeply concerned that many young people have drifted into deciding to not marry or to decide not to have children if they do marry.  They will not have the joy and satisfaction of raising Children  and eventually in their “golden years” having a caring and loving family as they reach old age  There is no society like family and in my old age it is not only memories that buoy me up but the family that is still  there and bringing me blessings far beyond the material by their caring and love.  And although our circumstances have been greatly altered by her Alzheimer’s  condition, Ruth and  I  are still “there” for each other every day as we visit and walk together and express our love for each other. And  in our walk with Jesus Christ  over the past 68 years, we know that we will be together  in Eternity in the very presence of  God ; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
So there is every good reason to decide, while we still have time on our side, to do whatever research is necessary and not let the doubters drag us into being lead around by the latest trends and nonsence about “there is no proof to say that there is Truth that can be believed and trusted.” Of course, there is truth all around us and people already have a measure of faith.  When we go to bed and to sleep, we have faith that morning will come, the sun will come up, the hours will pass and we will complete the round each day.  But there is more, much more! Dare to trust someone of Faith in God with a question or two.  Open a Bible anywhere in the first four New Testament books, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and with open minds just see what the writers are saying. Someone gave me a copy many yerars ago while I was still a young man but a husband and Dad of something I share with you.  “Happy shall he/she be, who refusing to sit in judgement upon the Word of God, yields him/her self up with humble spirit  to it’s mysterious, searching Power”. I did that when still a young man and ever since and I have never been the least bit disappointed in the results . God has revealed himself and his will for me  at every step, through Jesus Christ, his Son, Saviour and Lord of all creation, who loves every person who has ever lived.  He died that aweful death upon the Cross, bearing the sin of the whole creation on his own shoulders, to bring us to God the Father. That is how much He loves us. No one of us can buy our way into heaven.  The price is already paid by the one who said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, no-one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
