A Picture in a Gallery
by Dick Hunt, July 13th, 2011.

One Saturday afternoon in the fifties, I was in the city of Saskatoon Saskatchewan with a fellow theological student, Gerry Janzen, who wanted me to see a painting. He stopped me just inside the door of a basement studio and pointed out the picture on the wall at the far end of the room. He asked what appeared strange about the picture, which I quickly thought was a likeness of Jesus.  I said, “why are his eyes closed?”  He said “go up closer and slowly sink to your knees while you keep looking at the picture.”  I did and as I did the eyes opened. It was a very clever painting. The artist was making a statement even as Jesus made statements.  I was very moved with the painting.  I would dearly love to have a print of it to show you.

The painter was obviously aware that we can’t know the blessings of walking with Christ if we are haughty or proud or disobedient but only if we are prepared to come in penitence and a spirit of seeking forgiveness for our shortcomings and attitudes of feeling self sufficient.  Nor can we know the love of Christ unless we are willing to forget all efforts to bargain with Him or plead extenuating circumstances.  We all belong to God who gave us the very beginning of life at our conception and our life as a person at our birth. And when Jesus came into the world through His miracleous conception and His birth in that humble manger near Bethehem, he came to make God the Father known to all who will accept Him as Saviour and Lord.  When He died on the Cross he paid for all mankind by his own death, with his own blood, shed for all people in every age, especially those who believe in Him. And He died for his love for all mankind.  We could not breath unless God gave us the air in which we live. Every good and perfect gift comes from God and everyone needs to cultivate a strong desire to praise and thank God every day as we walk with the Lord Jesus.  “Do two  walk together unless they have agreed to do so?”
(Amos 3:3, N.I.V.)
