Volunteers
by Dick Hunt, April 5th, 2010.
This morning in a group session I sat next to a Scottish lady called Betty.  She has an adopted son who  with his wife, have been and are now doing a good deal of volunteer work in various places around the world. They are now, again, in Zambia, working to build facilities to provide safe clean drinking water for thousands of people, one of the most pressing needs in third world countries.  Their young daughter is training to be  a nurse so she can go to Africa and care for many needy people. These three are among many thousands  who are doing the same thing to help people where they are.  Their pay is twofold.  They receive, through their sponsoring fellowships, food and shelter and the bare necessities of life. But like all volunteers, they are rewarded by knowing that what they’re doing counts hugely in saving lives and providing a more vital life with  the people they serve.
There are many fellowships doing the same sort of thing. Some are secular.  Many are Christian, Jewish etc.  All are most vital.  Some are relatively  near at hand, such as Haiti.  One of my Grandsons has spent the better part of two years in Senegal, Ethiopia etc. developing and installing water systems, digging wells etc.  He is with ‘Engineers Without Borders’ and his trade is Civil Engineering. His sister is just about to graduate too as a Civil Engineer.  She will soon be off to Africa too, with “Engineers Without Borders’ to serve wherever the need is great.
We who have never had to worry about pure water  at the turn of the tap have no idea of the terrible problem created by having to get  water from sewage ditches or stagnant water holes or from distant sources, carrying it on their heads for the family. We worry about our Health Care system without realizing that billions of people have no health care at all. Doctors Without Borders, The Red Cross, World Vision and many other active   fellowships are doing all they can. We can help through our contributions and our prayers. They give life! Many are Martyrs!!!
